Spring 2010 Trophy Presentation. From left to right: Adam, Scott, Don, & Pat

Well the Spring 2010 BASH season has officially come to an end with the Spring 2010 BASH Cup being played at Tower of Games on April 24th. This match saw the two top teams in the league, The Psycho Clowns coached by Pat, and Peanut Butter Jelly Time coached by Don. Both teams gave it their all in this final last titanic struggle for the cup, but only one team could come out on top victorious. It seems that the fickle gods chaos were not with their players that day on the Blood Bowl pitch as after valiant struggle Peanut Butter Jelly Time came out on top in an impressive 3-0 victory. Their Star Player Whole Grain will be leaving on his tour of duty out on the high seas, returning from duty as SR Whole Grain and gaining the learning the kick skill during his travels. The entire Peanut Butter Jelly Team will also enjoy a bonus re-roll until the Fall BASH Cup is awarded later this year.

Before I continue I’d just like to take this moment to thank everyone who’s participated in our first season here at BASH. Without you there is no BASH league. I’ve had a great time gaming with you all over this past season and I can’t think a better group to have gamed this past season with. Except maybe the group we’ll have next season. *wink* I’d also like to thank the game stores who have helped support BASH. Tower of Games gets mentioned a lot since Mike and Nate Frantz have been integral in getting our events off without a hitch, and letting us use their cyber-cafe, but Atlantis Comics & Games, Groovy Gecko, and World’s Best Comics and Collectibles have all been really supportive as well. I’ve had a chance to talk to the staff and owners at these stores while setting up BASH, and I can say they’ve all been friendly, helpful people that I’d be glad to work with on any other projects in the future.

Speaking of the future. Here is the future as things stand right now. First before we get to the exciting upcoming summer plans, let’s talk about the Fall season. As many of you know there is a Legendary Edition planned for Blood Bowl in the fall. For us to be able to use it for our season two things need to happen. First, the darn thing has to actually get released. Second, whichever tool we use for leagues at that time has to be able to handle the new Legendary Edition. Now the original plan was to start the BASH league in September. In light of the Legendary Edition announcement I am willing to give that date some leeway, as far back as a November start date. How far back we push and if depends on when the Legendary Edition comes out. If it looks like the Legendary Edition has a chance to come out in September or October, then we’ll wait for it. If the release date dips into November then we won’t wait for it. If this happens and we run our season with the Standard edition of blood bowl our start time will be dependent on how soon we figure out that the release date won’t make September or October. If we find out early enough we’ll start in September  as planned. If we find out to late we could still have our season start as late as November. I’ll be mailing those who have signed up as soon as I have definite answers in this regard.

Now on to Summer. As some of you know, there is no BASH summer or winter leagues. It is my intention to host during this time other league events. These league events will usually be tournaments, matches with special rules, etc. These events are intended to be ways for new coaches started and ready for the league proper, and as a way for current coaches to get some play time in with their teams. The current event we have planned for summer is the Online Blood Bowl League Manager, or OBBLM, Cup. The OBBLM Cup is intended to be a way celebrate our league’s switch to this new, exciting league tool. The tournament’s date is not set, but it will be played at Tower of Games in the Cyber Cafe and will be open to new entries and current coaches alike and it will use the OBBLM tool. There is however one problem with this plan. OBBLM isn’t ready to host a tournament of Cyanide’s Blood Bowl for PC yet. That’s where our next event comes in.

The next event is the PCBB Beta Test league. The admin over at has asked me to commission their beta test league. The PCBB Beta Test league is what it sounds like, a beta test. The league is actually ongoing at this very moment. It’s completely open, you can play whoever you want in the league, and we’ll schedule a tournament proper once everyone has a chance to get some games in. To get in on the league simply email me with your requested account name. If you’re a new coach please send me the other information on the standard signup page as well, ignoring the “Blood Bowl Digital” account name section. Now since this is a Beta Test league there will be bugs, and strange things will occur. That means the teams will eventually be wiped, and they won’t count for BASH matches. You can keep yourself up to date on the current issues with OBBLM at it’s Google Code page. You may also report bugs there as well. Remember that we are testing isn’t the PC Blood Bowl game, but OBBLM’s interaction with it. So for example, if you win a game, report your match, and it shows the wrong team as winning, that’s a bug to report. If you’re playing a game and the game crashes when you take a screen shot, that’s not a bug to report to the OBBLM page. Keep in mind OBBLM is a tool for tracking leagues that predates the PC Blood Bowl game. It’s designed to manage leagues on tabletop, BOTOCS (A free Java Blood Bowl Client), and they are now adding support for PC Blood Bowl. That means the tool isn’t tailed for PC Blood Bowl. Keep that in mind when using the tool. It will let you make a team of Amazons. You just won’t be able to play them in game. One last thing, I haven’t written up any usage tutorials for the tool yet, so things might be a bit learn as you go. You can find information on how to report your matches on the forums. Downloaded your team should be easy to figure out, and creating your team is all done within OBBLM.

Some current known issues with OBBLM

  • It will give you an apothecary if you didn’t buy one
  • You cannot set your team’s color or logo in game currently
  • OBBLM operates on CRP rules, the edition after LRB5. What this means is that when you purchase players and look at them in OBBLM the will cost what they do in CRP, they will show skills from CRP, but sometimes they may not have the same skills when you use them in the PC Blood Bowl Game. Below is a list of all the changes to teams that was made in the CRP that affect the PC Blood Bowl game

Rerolls went from 40k to 50k

Pogoer – Lost secret weapon and Dirty Player, cost went up to 70k (So the cost will be higher, but they will still have Secret Weapon and Dirty Player in game)
Looney – Lost No Hands (They will still have No Hands when played in game)

Wood Elves

Catcher – Lost 1 MA, gained sprint (Fixed so that when you use the player they will have 8MA and Sprint to match the CRP rules)

Rat Ogre – Costs 150K instead of 160k (In other words, Skaven benefit from the cost discount)

Various adjustments to the cost of star players

Season Update – Road to the Cup

Whole Grain celebrates after scoring a touchdown

Well April is beginning to wind to a close, the last matches of the Spring 2010 season of BASH are over and only one game remains, The BASH Cup at Tower of Games! We’ve had a wild season filled triumph and tragedy, and each and every team has put their stamp on the inaugural season of BASH in one way or another, but like any competition there can only be one winner, and two teams have risen above the rest for a shot at the big prize.

The first is Peanut Butter Jelly Time, from head coach Don,  finishing the season with an amazing 15 league points, ending with an impressive 5 win, 1 loss record for the season. Peanut Butter Jelly Time sprinted early to the top of the ranks at the beginning of the season, but in their third game they lost two of promising players, and they’ve been struggling to replace the hole left by them ever since. The star of the Peanut Butter Jelly Roster has been their top Blitzer, Whole Grain, a player who is the second place league leader for casualties inflicted and fourth place for the top number of touchdowns. However, an injury in his last match means he’ll be unable to play in the upcoming cup.

The second team to make it into the Cup are the Psycho Clowns with head coach Pat. The Psycho Clowns end the season with 3 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws. A bit of a late bloomer as far as touchdowns are concerned, the Psycho Clowns have always had the market corned when it came to sheer carnage on the pitch. The star player of the Psycho Clowns without question has been Zeztorg, the league leader for casualties. This wild bull strikes fear into the hearts of the opposing team every time he rumbles out onto the pitch, flaunting a total of 6 casualties, 1 kill, 6 KOs, and 9 stuns. Unfortunately, similar to his rival on Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Zeztorg has also been injured thanks to a goblin chainsaw, meaning both teams will be without their heaviest hitters for the championship.

Who will win and take the Spring 2010 BASH Cup home? Come to Tower of Games this Saturday at 8PM to witness all the action live and in person. Also stay tuned to this page for more news after the Cup, such as Wes’ “Greatest Hitz” video, news about our next season and tournaments held in the interim, and our off-season working helping get OBLLM up to speed on PC Blood Bowl. The season may end, but BASH never sleeps!

Season Update – Bring Out Your Dead

Laly Tusk sends Sornafein to that great Blood Bowl pitch in the sky

Another two weeks have gone by and that means it’s time for another BASH Digital League season update. This week saw five matches of pure carnage take place in the league. The only thing higher than the scoreboards during these two weeks have been the apothecary bills to try to piece these players back together. For highlights of this bone-crunching action check out the BASH Facebook Page where you’ll find the photo pictured here and many more from every game played. After this batch of games the humans of Peanut Butter Jelly Time are riding high on an undefeated 5-0 record and are just one game away from having a completely undefeated season, giving them a league point total of 15. The elves of Arbor Doom scored a win against the Mini-Bosses to vault them to second place at 4 points, and the Psycho Clowns lay in wait in third with a draw and a loss for 1 point.

The action on the pitch this week was brutal. No team has walked away without at least one player with permanent injuries like smashed hips, ankles, and collarbones. But even more staggering is that four players from three different teams have been sent to meet their makers in the past few games. Among the dead are The Fat One and Wonderbread of Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Sornafein of Arbor Doom, and Gofbit of The Mini-Bosses. The total value of all the dead players totals up to a staggering 340,000 gold pieces. Zeztorg of the Psycho Clowns has been particularly brutal on the pitch. In only two games he’s managed to injure four players, kill one, knock out two, and stun four, making him the deadliest player to grace the BASH pitches.

However it wasn’t all death and carnage out on the field. Fantastic plays have lit up the scoreboards with touchdowns, racking in a total of 16 touchdowns scored among all the teams that played these past two weeks. Two striking plays really stand out among all the drives to the endzone. Jelly of Peanut Butter Jelly Time proved that fortune was with him during a dash for the end zone while dodging past Yelfagor a staggering three times to bring the ball in for a touchdown. And later on Thatyth of Arbor Doom proved what Wood Elves can do by leaping over a troll-filled line of scrimmage to put another touchdown on the big board.

These past two weeks marked our first official appearance at Tower of Games when Arbor Doom and The Mini-Bosses faced off in the cyber-cafe during the Tower of Games March TowerCon Irish event. The live match proved to be a big hit, and a great omen for the BASH Cup scheduled April 24th.

Only three and a half weeks remain in this season. Peanut Butter Jelly Time looks to their new Ogre, Fluffernutter, to help them seal their undefeated status for the season, but Zeztorg and the Psycho Clowns are still hungry for blood, can they put a stop to their aspirations? Arbor Doom sits poised to take second place, and they’ve grown a new Treeman, Grum, to put the “Arbor” back into Arbor Doom. Meanwhile the Mini-Bosses may be in last, but they still have two very hungry trolls and a chainsaw wielding maniac ready to destroy any player’s hopes of making it to the cup. How much havoc can they cause? There’s only five matches left in the season, and anything could happen, so keep reading, and be ready for another season update in two weeks!

Season Update – The First Two Weeks

Earguff tries to take a bite out of Ungit, but he slips away only fall on his head ending his Blood Bowl career

The season has begun and our first two weeks have flown right by.  Everyone should know that our plans for the BASH Cup have been finalized. We will be having the BASH Cup on April 24th at Tower of Games at 8PM during the April TowerCon lock-in. The two teams that will play the championship match will be announced on April 22nd or when the last league match has been played, whichever comes first. Even if you’re not one of the teams picked I urge you to show up and lend your support and to enjoy the lock-in and have some of the delicious cake that will be served. Entry will be $5, $3 if you are part of Tower of Game’s adventurer program. The theme for the April TowerCon will be Chinese and there will be a Chinese food pot-luck available for all attendees. The entry fee will be waived for anyone who provides a dish for the pot-luck.

In game news Peanut Butter Jelly Time is riding high on morale after back-to-back wins against Arbor Doom and The Mini-Bosses. The game against Arbor Doom pitted human vs. elf in a war to win the opening game of the season. With some lucky breaks to start out Peanut Butter Jelly Time managed to put two points on the board, but paid for their gusto later on when a crushing tackle fractured lineman Baseball Bat’s leg. The wood elves took advantage of the opportunity as wardancer Thatyth broke away from the pack and brought the ball into the endzone. Unfortunately the elves were unable to repeat the feat and the game ended 2-1 in favor of Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

The following week saw the goblins of the Mini-Bosses facing off against Peanut Butter Jelly Time in a grueling match for both sides. Human thrower Peanut Butter couldn’t manage to pass the ball all night, fumbling the spiked pigskin every time he pulled his arm back. The humans managed to sneak the ball into the end zone once in the first half and another time in the second. The goblins put up a fight, but ultimately their hopes were dashed by their underfed trolls, who tried to eat their goblin teammates on two occasions in the game, the first attempt leaving Ungit with a fractured skull after squirming away only to land on his head. Players seemed to be thrown off the pitch left and right with injuries and penalties in this game, and in the last few couple of turns of gameplay only a handful of players from each team managed to be on their feet to play the ball, much less score, leaving the endgame total 2-0 in favor of Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

Spring 2010 Season Kicks-Off Today

The first of March is here at last and that means the first season of BASH has finally begun. For our inaugural season we have four teams ready to bring chaos on the Blood Bowl pitch. This season’s mayhem makers are The Mini-Bosses, a maniacal group of goblins, the Psycho Clowns, a group of rough and tumble Chaos races, Arbor Doom, a group of Wood Elves ready to prune the competition, and lastly the human hooligans, Peanut Butter Jelly-Time. In addition we also have one reserve team, the Naggarond Snatchers, which is available for any late entries should they come forward. Wish them all luck as they head out on the pitch.

To all coaches who are unfamiliar with the procedure for playing a league game for BASH you’ll want to read this usage guide on how to do it. In short, as long as you remember to download your team before each game and as long as one coach remembers to upload the match report after the game everything will run smoothly. For those who would like to play their first matches against someone who’s had experience with the system before you can speak to myself and Adam as we’ve both used the system for matches previously.

When you view the league roster now you will now see a schedule. Remember that you do not have to play matches in the order shown on the schedule. The schedule just shows the match ups left to play in the regular season. Speaking of schedule at the bottom of this posting is a schedule for this season ready to be saved and printed, made as wallpaper, or to be kept in a dark lonely folder on your hard drive. We’re slated to run seven and a half weeks for this season which means you’ll finish up all your matches with some time left over if you play one match each week. It’s looking like the BASH Cup will be scheduled to be held at Tower of Games on April 24th. The details are still being finalized and if things need to be changed they will. Now’s the time to make sure you can attend the event where the top two teams will face off for the cup and the trophy will be presented. If you have a preference for the time of the BASH Cup on the 24th, keeping in mind it can’t be earlier than 7pm, or if you have an issue with attending on the 24th contact me.

One last order of business. As you play your games if you’d like you may submit the match replays of your matches. If you send me your replay file then you have a chance for an image from your match being posted here on this site for the league progress reports. If enough replays are submitted then there will be a highlight reel created from everyone’s matches. Replays can be found on Windows XP in the “My Documents\BloodBowl\Saves\Replays” folder and on Vista or Windows 7 in the “Documents\BloodBowl\Saves\Replays” folder.
